Summary
I ’m a vast devotee of the originalMistborntrilogy , butthere ’s no denying thatMistbornEra 2 does one thing betterthan Brandon Sanderson ’s earlier series . When I first discoveredMistborn , I was drawn to the story for multiple reason . Thefantasy serial publication ' unique magic systemand compelling social commentary were high spot that immediately drew me in . However , I also find oneself Kelsier and Vin to be relatable and challenging master characters . And as a woman who ’s always appear for complex distaff leads in fantasy stories , Vin ’s tale was peculiarly exciting to read .
I found Vin to strike the staring balance between strength and exposure , and I was invested as she discovered her tycoon and grappled with side of herself she ’d never search before . Vin ’s best moments throughoutMistbornfully sell me on her lineament , produce her one of my favorite fictional heroines . That ’s why it ail me to acknowledge thatMistbornEra 2 surpassed the first trilogy in one significant way — even though the first set of books see Vin headline the story .
Brandon Sanderson ’s Mistborn books boast some of the best storytelling in fantasy , and they may leave readers wondering what to piece up next .

I Love Vin, But The Original Mistborn Trilogy Is Lacking When It Comes To Women
The Books Needed More Female Characters
AlthoughMistbornEra 1 has a better lead in Vin , MistbornEra 2 go by the original trilogy when it come to female characters . I know following Vin through the original series , and I thought she was a corking example of what women in fantasy should count like . However , she was the only woman I was impressed by inSanderson ’s first threeMistbornbooks . Tindwyl was interesting enough . However , her character arc was too short - exist , and she drop far too much time further the storylines of prominent male part , like Elend and Sazed .
This proved a disappointing ingredient ofMistbornEra 1 , but I appreciate Era 2 ’s woman much more .
Other than Tindwyl , most of the women inMistbornfind themselves at odds with Vin . I feel like this uphold the " not like other female child " trope , and it also made it difficult to relate to any other distaff character that Sanderson introduced . I was surprised by Allriane Cett at time , but she never offer a reason tolikeher . And I could n’t get behind someone like Shan Elariel . It ’s not even a matter of rooting for her ; she ’s not a particularly well - pen or complex villain . This prove a disappointing component ofMistbornEra 1 , but I appreciated Era 2 ’s women much more .

Mistborn Era 2 Does A Much Better Job With Its Female Characters
AlthoughMistbornEra 2 ’s main character reference are both men , Sanderson ’s second set of account book does a much better job with the women who appear throughout the account . Both Marasi and Steris dally outstanding rolesMistborn ’s second era , and I found each of them to be strong and intriguing in their own ways . I was pep up by Marasi ’s power to rise up in life , despite her difficult familial setting . I also admired her work as a constable , even if I wished Sanderson had explored her quality a bit more in the later Book .
Unlike Marasi , I did n’t right away take to Steris . However , it was vindicated that Sanderson put a lot of view into her journeying , and I was sell by the timeMistbornEra 2 came to a finale . The fact that Steris also add autism representation to the books only made me have a go at it her more . I enjoyed watching her grow as a person , just as I loved following Marasi ’s bow . Both women feel less peripheral than the supporting distaff characters from Era 1 . They were allowed to have flaws and improve , and they did n’t seem to disdain other women or their own feminine qualities .
I’m Hopeful About The Next Mistborn Book After Era 2’s Improvement
Brandon Sanderson’s Era 3 Books Could Do Even Better
MistbornEra 2 is over , but Sanderson has plans to publish more al-Qur’an in the future . The improved writing of female characters in Era 2 gives me hope that the char in Era 3 will be even better . Sanderson himself admitted that he could have added more women to the originalMistborntrilogy ( viaArcanum Unbound ) . I ’m guessing this is part of the reason he focalise on tally such well - developed distaff characters to Wax and Wayne ’s story . And if his commitment to including solid and interesting women continues , it foretell well forthe nextMistbornbook .
I ’d personally sleep with to see Sanderson take on another female lead , but only time will tell if he writes a fictitious character to rival Vin .
I ’d in person love to see Sanderson take on another female trail , but only metre will tell if he writes a character to rival Vin . Of course , I ’d be just as happy with more complex women in hold character . It ’d be specially heavy if they got to participate in the action . WithMistborn ’s improved approaching to women and changing setting , the future of Sanderson ’s fantasy saga looks smart .
