Capricorn One
Yes , it ’s another week and therefore there must be the announcement of yet another remake .
This time it ’s Peter Hyams ' 1978 Sci - Fi thrillerCapricorn One .
The original was a neat confederacy story follow three spaceman ( James Brolin , Sam Waterston and O.J Simpson , yesthatO.J Simpson ) on a manned delegation to Mars . However , they did n’t really land on Mars . Due to a fault with their ship , they are in fact in a plastic film studio in the desert motion-picture photography , their " Mars walking " on a legal stage .
Elliott Gould plays an investigative diarist who suspect that the landing have been faked .
presently Brolin , Waterston and Simpson are on the rill ( some things never change ) fighting for their lives in the desert , while Gould is strain to nail the tarradiddle of the C .
Fellow Irishman John Moore will direct the film . Moore seems to have a making love of remake ( and the desert ) , experience previously helmed remake ofThe OmenandThe Flight of the Phoenix .
I really enjoyed the original film , and I like Moore ’s work inBehind Enemy LinesandPhoenix(I ca n’t bring myself to watchThe Omenthough ) so I retrieve that this could be a neat film and a jolly decent remaking .
The new pic has been pen by Peter Buchman , who save Steven Soderbergh ’s ( possible ) two - part Che Guevara film .
However , I have to necessitate : When will all these remakes stop ?
Probably never , but in earnest , how many remake have been announce lately ?
Just off the top of my head I can think of :
The Bad Lieutenant , I sprinkle on Your Grave , Highlander , Flash Gordon , Conan , RoboCop , Friday The 13th , The Dirty 12 , Escape From New YorkandPlan 9 From Outer Space .
That ’s a lot of motion-picture show , considering the number of writer out there with original mind that are blow around Hollywood .
However these remakes have built in brand credit , and once the remaking is in the can the studio can start repackaging the original film on DVD . What I regain even more flaky is that they are now making sequels to remakes ( see theOcean’smovies and the forthcomingTopkapi Affair ! ) .
Capricorn Oneisn’t a beloved classic . So I do n’t heed this film being re - made - it could be a somewhat fun motion-picture show if done aright . Plus , it will help oneself the little seen original pic get hold an audience thirty years after it first remove the large sieve , and that ’s not a unsound thing - you just ca n’t beat a good bit of Elliott Gould .
It is also interesting to luff out that both Elliott Gould and James Brolin have been married to Barbara Streisand ( Brolin still is ) .
