Riker Killed His Love Interest In Star Trek: TNG’s “The Vengeance Factor”
Riker & Yuta’s brief romance ends violently in TNG season 3, episode 9, “The Vengeance Factor.”
As Commander Riker tries to get to know Yuta , she remains close off and speak cryptically about her past . Picard help a coming together between Sovereign Marouk and the Gatherers , and thing are going well until one of the Gatherers wind up all in . In the ensuing probe , Dr. Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden)determines that someone killed the Gatherer with an engineer virus mean to kill phallus of a specific Acamarian clan known as the Lornak . While searching through retiring records , the Enterprise crowd member find evidence that Yuta was behind the attack .
When confronted , Yuta reveal that most of her clan was wiped out days ago by the Lornak , and she was tasked with kill the surviving members of the oppose kinship group . Yuta now seeks to kill the drawing card of the Gatherers , Chorgan ( Stephen Lee ) , the last surviving Lornak . As Yuta draw close Chorgan , Riker fire a phaser at her . Despite a direct hit , she continue to move toward Chorgan . As Captain Picard sits unmoving in the desktop , Riker fires on Yuta two more time , eventually vaporizing her .
Yuta’s Violent Star Trek: TNG Death Was Unnecessary
Yuta’s death feels overly dramatic and out of place for Star Trek.
With the setup of Commander Riker ’s obvious interest in Yuta and Yuta ’s evasiveness , Star Trek : The Next Generation ’s " The Vengeance Factor " build to a dramatic orgasm , but the final encounter is strangely staged . For one affair , Captain Picard sits in the backdrop of the scene , unmoving , making no reaction as Riker fires at Yuta multiple times . Yuta is far enough aside from her target , Chorgan , that anyone could have stopped her but by restraining her . She has no arm other than a virus specifically mastermind to harm only Chorgan , stand for anyone could have stepped in to stop over her .
In the book , Captains ' log : The unauthorised Complete Trek Voyages , the theatre director of " The Vengeance Factor , " Timothy Bond , revealed that Picard had to continue still so that the VFX guessing of Yuta being gasify would work .
It ’s never made clean how Yuta is able-bodied to rest upright after two muscular phaser blast , but disregardless , there were several other , less violent ways , she could have been apprehended . Picard or Riker could have rank the Enterprise to air her now to the brig , for object lesson . Not only does Yuta ’s last feel unnecessary , but it also feels out of character for Riker . Star Trek : The Next Generationdidn’t often include such spectacular force , making the ending of " The Vengeance Factor " feel shockingly out of plaza .
