Although the patch ofDiscoveryseason 5 is a subsequence to theStar Trek : The Next Generationepisode , " The Chase " , there have been multiple references toDS9.Discoveryvisited the Badlands fromDS9 in time of year 5 , instalment 8 , " Labyrinths " , and have been pit against the Breen , first seen inDS9season 4 , episode 5 , " Indiscretion " .
However , there are two more pernicious nod toStar Trek : Deep Space NineinStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , episode 9 . The first is Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin - Green ) and her away squad disguising themselves as Breen , alike to how Major Kira Nerys ( Nana Visitor ) and Gul Dukat ( Marc Alaimo ) infiltrated a Breen prison house encampment in " injudiciousness " . The gruff and stoic Rayner and the slightly chaotic Tilly may not seem like an obvious partnership , but they really work together in " Lagrange Point " . Toward the end of the episode , Rayner explains to Tilly why he made her his turn One :
" It ’s because you ’re impertinent as sin , you ’re a in effect leader , and if we were stuck in a foxhole together , I would n’t kill you . That is , unless you gave me more of that warm and fuzzy boost that I do n’t demand . "
Rayner is a Kellerun , so his reference to a foxhole is a reminder ofStar Trek : Deep Space Nineseason 2 , installment 13 , " Armageddon Game " . That episode sawO’Brien and Bashirpinned down in a Kellerun fox hole , press for their lives . O’Brien was the Rayner to Bashir ’s Tilly , a gruff humanity who ab initio put up a front to deal with his fellow officer ’s ingratiating forward motion . Commander Rayner and Lt . Tilly is a great partnership inStar Trek : Discovery , as they dead compliment each other ’s unique personality . It ’s disappointing , therefore , that this exciting unexampled Starfleet partnership only has one installment leave beforeStar Trek : Discoveryends for good . apart from aTilly and RaynerStar Trekshow , the best place for the two characters to team up will be in the upcomingStar Trek : Starfleet Academy . It ’s long been distrust that Mary Wiseman would transfer fromDiscoverytoStarfleet Academy , much likeTNG ’s Colm Meaney did onStar Trek : Deep Space Nine .
It ’s latterly been announce that Holly Hunter will play the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy in theStar Trek : Discoveryspinoff , which is set to start filming in late summer 2024 .
Given Rayner ’s no - nonsense overture to dictation , it would be hilarious to see him drafted in to teach the next coevals of Starfleet Academy plebe . give that their experience inStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 have bonded Rayner and Tilly , it would make sense for her to convey him in as a mentor or inflict professor . There ’s a lot of comic electric potential in Rayner and Tilly clashing over their respective pedagogy method that could makeStar Trek : Starfleet Academya playfulness continuation of their burgeon friendship .
